Bangkok has two airports: Suvarnabhumi (BKK) and Don Mueang (DMK). Check the three-letter code on every booking: Airports of Thailand lists BKK as Suvarnabhumi and DMK as Don Mueang, and they are on different sides of the city.

If otherwise similar flights let you choose, BKK usually offers the simpler rail trip to Sukhumvit, Siam and Silom. DMK is generally better placed for Chatuchak and northern Bangkok, while its airport buses directly serve Victory Monument, Pratunam, Lumphini and the Khao San Road area. Flight time and fare still matter more than shaving off one city interchange.

The quick comparison

Choice Suvarnabhumi (BKK) Don Mueang (DMK)
Main rail link Airport Rail Link from terminal Level B1 SRT Dark Red Line at Don Mueang station
Central interchange Makkasan for MRT Phetchaburi; Phaya Thai for BTS Krung Thep Aphiwat for MRT at Bang Sue
Airport-to-hub rail fare ฿15–45 by distance ฿33 from Don Mueang to Krung Thep Aphiwat
Useful direct buses S1 to Khao San Road and Sanam Luang A1 Mo Chit, A2 Victory Monument, A3 Lumphini, A4 Sanam Luang
Metered taxi 24 hours; meter plus ฿50 airport surcharge and applicable extras 24 hours; meter plus ฿50 airport surcharge and applicable extras
Strongest fit Sukhumvit, Siam and many Silom trips Chatuchak, northern Bangkok and places on A1–A4

Rail fares in the table cover only the named system. Budget separately for another BTS or MRT ticket after changing lines.

BKK: the Airport Rail Link is its main advantage

The Airport Rail Link station is on Level B1 of BKK’s main terminal. AOT lists service from 05:30 to midnight. The line runs to Makkasan and Phaya Thai; the government route guide gives a fare range of ฿15–45 and an end-to-end journey of no more than 30 minutes. See AOT’s current BKK transport page and the Airport Rail Link route and fare guide.

Choose the interchange by destination:

  • Phaya Thai links to the BTS Sukhumvit Line. It is the straightforward change for Siam and BTS stations along Sukhumvit. The BTS service guide confirms the connection.
  • Makkasan links by a short walk to Phetchaburi station on the MRT Blue Line. This is often more useful for Asok, Silom and other Blue Line destinations.

For Rattanakosin and Khao San Road, rail is not door to door. AOT lists the S1 bus from BKK to Khao San Road and Sanam Luang from 06:00 to 20:00. Outside those hours—or with awkward luggage—a taxi removes the rail-to-road transfer.

BKK’s regular taxi queue is on Level 1 between Gates 4 and 7. Taxis operate 24 hours; AOT states that metered fares start at ฿35 or ฿40 depending on vehicle category, with a ฿50 airport surcharge. Expressway tolls and permitted baggage charges may add to the fare. The designated Grab pickup is at Level 1, Gate 4. Check BKK pickup locations and current conditions.

DMK: choose between the Red Line and an airport bus

The SRT Dark Red Line connects Don Mueang station with Krung Thep Aphiwat Central Terminal. From there, follow signs to Bang Sue station for the MRT Blue Line into central Bangkok. The current adult fare table lists ฿33 between Don Mueang and Krung Thep Aphiwat; the operator’s timetable runs from early morning until around midnight. Check the current Red Line fare table and timetable.

This route is useful when predictable rail travel matters more than avoiding a change. It is not equivalent to BKK’s Airport Rail Link: Krung Thep Aphiwat is north of Bangkok’s main hotel districts, so most visitors need the MRT or another final connection. The government Red Line guide confirms that Don Mueang station serves the airport and that the central terminal connects with the MRT.

DMK’s airport buses may be more direct:

  • A1: Chatuchak and Mo Chit 2
  • A2: Chatuchak and Victory Monument
  • A3: Pratunam, Ratchaprasong and Lumphini Park
  • A4: Democracy Monument, Khao San Road and Sanam Luang

AOT’s detailed listing currently gives fares of ฿30 for A1 and A2 and ฿50 for A3 and A4. It lists A1 from 05:45 to midnight, A2 from 06:00 to 23:00, and A3/A4 from 06:00 to 23:00, with pickup outside Terminal 1, Gate 6 and at the service-hall area. Verify the current A1–A4 details before travel because airport pages have carried differing schedules. The buses use city roads, so direct does not always mean faster.

Metered taxis operate 24 hours from Terminal 1, Gate 8 and beside Terminal 2, Gate 15. AOT specifies a ฿50 airport surcharge; passengers also pay expressway tolls and any regulated luggage fees. See DMK’s official taxi details.

Which airport fits each Bangkok area?

Sukhumvit and Siam

BKK normally gives the simpler public-transport journey. Take the Airport Rail Link to Phaya Thai for the BTS, or leave at Makkasan and walk to MRT Phetchaburi. From DMK, an A1 or A2 bus can connect with the BTS around Chatuchak, while the Red Line route requires a further MRT leg.

For an address close to MRT Sukhumvit, the BKK route through Makkasan and Phetchaburi avoids going west to Phaya Thai and back again.

Silom and Lumphini

BKK has the more direct all-rail combination: Airport Rail Link to Makkasan, then MRT from Phetchaburi to Si Lom or another nearby station. From DMK, A3 directly serves the Lumphini area but is exposed to road traffic; Red Line plus MRT is the rail alternative.

Rattanakosin and Khao San Road

Neither airport has a direct rail arrival. BKK has the S1 bus, while DMK has A4 to Khao San Road and Sanam Luang. Compare the published bus hours with your arrival time rather than choosing only by map distance. With several bags or an arrival outside bus hours, a taxi is simpler.

Chatuchak and northern Bangkok

DMK is generally the better fit. A1 and A2 serve the Chatuchak area, and the Red Line runs through northern Bangkok to Krung Thep Aphiwat. BKK requires crossing more of the city.

Thonburi

There is no universal winner. For accommodation near the MRT Blue Line, BKK connects through Makkasan/Phetchaburi and DMK through Krung Thep Aphiwat/Bang Sue. The Red Line also continues west from Krung Thep Aphiwat toward Bang Son, Bang Bamru and Taling Chan, although that may require a change of Red Line service. For a riverside hotel or an address far from a station, compare the precise location and number of changes; a taxi may remove a difficult final leg.

When a taxi makes more sense

Rail is attractive for one or two lightly packed travellers during operating hours. A taxi becomes more competitive when:

  • three or four people can divide one fare;
  • the accommodation is not near an Airport Rail Link, BTS, MRT or Red Line station;
  • luggage makes multiple interchanges difficult;
  • the flight lands too close to the last train; or
  • door-to-door simplicity matters more than avoiding road traffic.

Use the official taxi queue and retain the printed queue ticket. For a regular Bangkok taxi, the airport’s published arrangement is the meter plus the airport surcharge, tolls and any permitted luggage fees.

Transferring between BKK and DMK

AOT provides a free transfer shuttle from 05:00 to midnight, every 30 minutes, but only for passengers connecting between flights. Passengers must show a flight ticket or other proof of onward travel plus a passport or national ID. At BKK, it leaves from Level 2, Gate 3. Check the current BKK–DMK shuttle rules.

This is an inter-airport journey, not a terminal change. A government guide published in 2023 estimated one to two hours on the road, but traffic can make that an unreliable planning figure. Immigration, baggage collection, airline check-in and security come on top of it. See the government’s shuttle guidance. Avoid a tight connection—especially on separate tickets, where the onward airline may not protect you after a missed flight.
